My traffic numbers are slowly rising (which is great!!) and I really appreciate the support, especially when posting something personal. And back to it! This week’s HOW TO post is Office Snacks. I know we did breakfasts on the go last week, and now that I’m really cracking down on living primal, I find that I needed to find good, healthy, nutritious things to snack on.

Some things have to be made the night before, others can be ordered or store bought. At my office we use FreshDirect, that’s an online (delivery only) supermarket that has a wide variety of wholesome fruits, veggies, packaged salads, and nuts. That’s one nice thing in New York, not only can I order online, but I can take a quick walk outside my office and have a hundred restaurants in walking distance. Now if only I could control what they put in my food…

So here’s what I love to eat during the day;

Carrot/Celery Sticks

I love to mix my celery with nut butter, and carrots are great by themselves! Plus they fill pretty easily and because of carrots high sugar content they make a perfect end of meal snack too. I find if I’m super hungry in the middle of the day (or the middle of the morning) a quick packet of carrots curbs my hunger. FreshDirect does some great pre-packaged 2oz snack packs.

Boring. But delicious.

Boring. But delicious.

Sugar Snap Peas

There’s a little bit of controversy over whether or not peas are okay while living primally, but really, I can’t see anything wrong with them. With 40 Calories, 10g Carbs and 2g of Protein per 1/2 cup, they’re a little high on the carb intake, but how many people are going to eat cup after cup of sugar snap peas? They’re a great little snack. Mostly (or at least according to Mark) it’s the legumes you have to keep an eye out for - namely, chickpeas and split peas, not sugar snap peas. Comments?

Controversially delicious

Controversially filling.

Hard Boiled Eggs

It’s not called incredible for nothing. Bake a batch on Sunday, have them all through the week! Don’t know how to hard boil? Check out my last “HOW TO” - turns out you can eat ‘em for breakfast too!

A whole tray of snacks!

A whole tray of snacks!

These are great for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks! They’re quick and easy and can be taken on the go, or eaten over salads- you can whip the yolks with avocado, paprika, curry, or any kind of spices!

Spinach/Lettuce Wraps

Turns out you can take your leftover dinner, wrap it in a leaf of lettuce, and have yourself a meal! I usually stir fry up some veggies with some sort of meat for dinner. When I make a little extra I can throw it all in a container with a couple leafs of lettuce- and it’s a quick and easy snack for the office the next day.

Primal Extra: Eat it with your hands. And grunt.

Quick, low carb, delish!

Berries

The lowest carb/insulin affecting of the fruits- and an easy snack to grab a handful of and go! I keep a stash in our office fridge at all times- also great mixed with a little mascarpone or Fage.

Sweet Succulant Berries.

Leftover lunch/dinner

Leftovers are always easy - because it’s a meal already made, and if it’s at home with me and the BF, it’s usually not quite enough leftover to be another whole meal. So it’s a great snack! Pack it in a container, take it to work tomorrow. Almost too easy…

Nuts

Easy, convenient, high in protein.

Nuts for Nuts.

Dried Fruit

Roll up some nuts in the dried fruit, and you’ve got a protein packed snack. Make sure to buy fruit without added sugar - it’s got enough delicious natural sugar.

Primal Note: For those trying to lose weight, limit the dried fruit- as the sugar/carbs can add up!

No added sugar.

Egg Beaters with Salsa

This is also one of my favorite breakfasts, make your own salsa at home, or buy fresh made salsa (FreshDirect has great salsa if you’re in NYC) and throw it on after cooking. If you’re at the office you can microwave the egg beaters, and it makes for a good, easy snack to curb the hunger and sustain blood sugar till the next meal!

Update- Due to a wonderful question by reader Sarah I wanted to clarify something; real eggs are the best way to go, and if you’re blessed to be in an area with cookware that allows you too cook those eggs, please do! I use egg beaters (as little as possible because they’re processed) when I am craving eggs, and I’m at work (or elsewhere with a microwave, yet no stovetop) and am fresh outta my hard boiled stash!

Now, with yolk!

Now, with yolk!

Nutter Apples

It’s all in the name. Almond butter and apple. Sweet, salty, amazing.

Pretend this is almond butter.

Red Pepper/cheese

This is possibly the best thing that came out of when I did the South Beach Diet years ago. I not only learned that red peppers were amazingly delicious by themselves, but also with a little bit of cheese. Primal eating means get the highest quality of whatever you’re eating- so I like it with fresh mozzarella. But if you’re pressed for time, the whole milk stringles string cheese is great too (with little preservatives). Cut the pepper into strips and line it with a string of the string cheese. It’s amazing.

How can you resist?

Fage Yogurt

Greek yogurt is some of the highest quality out there, with a low carb count and a lot of protein, it’s an easy snack on the go. Drizzle with a little raw honey and some berries and it’s a great snack (or dessert) anytime.

Fa-Yeh!

Chicken- Rotisserie Style!

Peel and go!

Peel and go!

It’s already cooked, it’s ready to eat. Buy one for lunch and put in the fridge for a two-day snack attack. You’ll always have chicken on hand (and can grab that red pepper and cheese to eat with!) and even though co-workers might stare and salivate - you’ll be satiated.

Just curious, why would you opt for the (highly processed, not-too-primal) EggBeaters instead of using real eggs, which are perfect?

Good question- and one I didn’t address I suppose. This list is mostly about convenience- which is why I have hard boiled eggs in here, but if you have access to another way to cook ‘em (or can throw them in a smoothie) by all means!

I have eggs in my breakfast list, but as I’m usually in the office (i.e. away from a place with a full kitchen) when I need a little pick-me-up I need something that is convenient.

I agree that EggBeaters are NOT that primal and shouldn’t be eaten everyday- but they’re an okay alternative.

    Thanks for asking!

Thanks for your answer! By the way, I’ve personally had excellent luck microwaving real eggs at my office - I’ll often chuck a couple in a tupperware with some frozen spinach, spices and a bit of butter for a tasty lunchtime omelet :)
